var1=Evidence of Burberry&var2=17" x 14" 2005&var3=MARBLE AND SMALTI GLASS MOSAIC&var4=Most mosaics are discovered incomplete. Being buried for a few thousand years will do that to art. Purposely "found" but not intact, "Burberry" is the first in a new series. It suggests if you look a little closer, you might find hints of today's consumerism existing in the artwork of days long past. This piece is made almost entirely of marble, save for a little maroon smalti to accurately capture the iconic pattern of all things Burberry. I love the look and texture of mosaics made completely in marble. Unlike pieces made with a significant amount of smalti glass, they have a beautiful, rustic understated quality about them. Glass smalti was introduced into mosaic art many centuries after marble. When you see an ancient mosaic containing glass tesserae, you know it almost certainly post-dates any mosaic made solely of marble. The reference I gathered to complete "Burberry" included images of ancient Roman sculpture, examples of women rendered in mosaics, and of course, a Burberry scarf. Well, actually, a knock-off of a Burberry scarf. I'd also like to thank my hand model (who also happens to be my wife) for donating her time to the completion of this piece.
